STOP, STAND BACK, HOW CAN I MAKE IT BETTER?

What is the One Thing You Can Do Today to Make Things Better?

I heard a great quote the other day: "You can't change the tyres on a car whilst you are driving on the motorway." This resonated deeply with me, especially in the context of the hospitality industry.

Stop, Stand Back, Take a Moment, and Reflect

If you get up every morning and dive straight into your business, tackling the long to-do list and dealing with the inevitable crises that arise on a weekly basis (it's hospitality, after all), then when will you have the headspace to fix or even see the bigger issues?

It's not about putting your head in the sand. You know there are bigger things that need attention—things that have gone slightly awry from making do in the moment or letting something go that perhaps should have been dealt with differently. It's far too easy for your plans and your business to deviate from the course you initially set. The daily urgency distracts you, and while you may be aware of the need for course correction, it always seems to have to wait.

If something feels off about where your business is or how you are feeling about your work, then stop. stand back and ask, "How can I do this better?"

Creating Space for Creativity

Just practicing this can give you a moment to see things differently. The space and the question allow your brain to be creative. Even just identifying where the problem is can be a huge step in the right direction.

Strategic Thinking in Hospitality

Hospitality is the most rewarding and amazing industry, but it can be hugely taxing, especially when you find yourself feeling alone. Make some time to think strategically. Allow yourself the opportunity to step back from the immediate demands and look at the bigger picture. This isn't a luxury; it's a necessity for long-term success and personal well-being.

By taking a moment to reflect and ask how it can improve, you open up the possibility for real change. You give yourself the chance to address the root causes of issues, rather than just the symptoms. And in doing so, you can steer your business back on course and find renewed energy and purpose in your work.

So take a moment. Stop, stand back, and reflect.
